Lesson 1. For a Better Future

Looking to the Future. Life Skill for the 21st Century

[1~2]

Mr. Han: Hello, everyone, and welcome to the show.

Tonight, the famous futurist Mr. Miller is here to discuss society's changing demands. Specifically, he will discuss the skills ❶ what today's youth will need for life in the 21st century. Mr. Miller, thank you for ❷ joining us.

Mr. Miller: Good evening Mr. Han. Thank you for inviting me here.

Mr. Han: Now, let's talk about some of these 21st-century life skills ❸ that I just mentioned. What is the first one ❹ that you'd like to introduce?

Mr. Miller: It's the skill of being able to use digital information ❺ effectively. We can also call it digital literacy.

1. 윗 글의 ❶~❺중 잘못된 것을 고르세요.

Mr. Han: What does that mean exactly?

Mr. Miller: Well, until recently, literacy has meant the ability to read, write, and do basic math. But that's changing. We now get our information from a variety of digital sources, in particular the Internet. ______________, the amount of information available is constantly increasing; research suggests that the amount of digital information available doubles every hour. Mr. Han: I see. So what other life skills for the 21st century can you tell us about?

Mr. Miller: Well, another major skill people will need is cross-cultural awareness.

Mr. Han: Could you give us a better idea of what that means?

Mr. Miller: Certainly. The global economy means ❶ (which/that) young people will have more opportunities to work with people from other countries. Mr. Han: Can you describe that in a little more detail?

Mr. Miller: Sure. Collaboration skills include working effectively with others to accomplish a common goal. Being a team player is 100% necessary in the business world of the future. And communication skills are the basis of that.

The economy is changing fast, and it is estimated that by 2014, 80% of jobs will be related to the service industry. That means 80% of us will be working directly with other people, so communication is crucial. In fact,

Those who can are the kind of people who make and keep friends easily and collaborate with others well.
