35. Mathematics will attract those it can attract, but it will do nothing to overcome resistance to science.

수학은 수학이 유혹할 수 있는 사람들을 유혹할 것이지만, 과학에 대한 저항을 극복하기 위해서 아무것도 못할 것이다.

 

 

Science is universal in principle but in practice it speaks to very few.

과학은 원칙적으로 보편적이지만 실제로 거의 사람들을 설득하지 못한다.

 

 

Mathematics may be considered a communication skill of the highest type, frictionless so to speak;

수학은 말하자면 마찰 없는 최고 형태의 의사소통 기술이라 간주될 것 같다.

 

 

and at the opposite pole from mathematics, the fruits of science show the practical benefits of science without the use of words.

그리고 수학 반대편에서, 과학의 결실은 언어의 사용 없이 과학의 실질적 장점을 보여준다.

But those fruits are ambivalent.

그러나 그러한 결실은 상반된다.

Science as science does not speak ideally, all scientific concepts are mathematized when scientists communicate with one another,

and when science displays its products to non-scientists / it need not, and indeed is not able to, resort to salesmanship.

그리고 과학이 자신의 결과를 비 과학자에게 보여줄 때, 과학은 판매술에 의존할 필요도 없고 실제고 의존할 수도 없다.

 

 

When science speaks to others, it is no longer science,

과학이 다른 사람을 설득할 때, 그것은 더 이상 과학이 아니고

and the scientist becomes or has to hire a publicist who dilutes the exactness of mathematics.

④ neglecting his duty of bridging the gap between science and the public

과학과 대중 사이의 간격을 좁히는 역할을 무시한다.

 

⑤ violating the code of intellectual conduct that defines him as a scientist

자신을 과학자로서 정의하는 지적인 행위의 윤리를 위반한다.
