Indian women are very religious and cultural. And even the most modern Indian woman would transform into a traditional avatar from time to time. They take extra care in whatever they do, including treating, caring for and pampering their men.

No one can wear the saree like the Indian women. It’s actually a wonder as to how these women can drape themselves in 6 yards of cloth and still come out looking ultra-sexy and drop-dead gorgeous. And it takes a certain panache to carry off the saree in style, which Indian women manage to accomplish effortlessly.

Supercavitating Very High Speed Stealth Anti-Piracy and Special Ops ship

Juliet Marine Systems is a maritime technology think tank that is developing innovative solutions for naval and commercial applications. They seek to assure fleet force protection in response to small vessel terrorist attacks against our Navy and coalition ships. There is a clear and present danger of these tactics being used against the U.S. Navy throughout the world and in our home ports. These same innovative technologies, applied to commercial needs, will provide a significant decrease in transit time and increase in energy efficiency, resulting in the savings of thousands of gallons of fuel daily.

동영상 강좌 https://youtu.be/glddRIs58bo

As a maritime systems think tank, Juliet Marine Systems provides offensive, defensive and ISR solutions that are developed in a skunk works operation able to rapidly invent and construct needed technologies and systems for the Navy and armed forces. We have already developed a surface variant of a supercavitating craft and are planning to apply our unique technology in a Unmanned Undersea Vehicle (UUV) prototype.

Although it is a surface vessel, the hydrodynamics of the twin submerged buoyant tubular foils are also a test bed for Juliet Marine's next planned prototype, a long duration UUV. This revolutionary proprietary technology vessel platform will assure force protection through stealth fighter/attack capabilities along with integrated situation awareness. These vessels would create a protective fleet perimeter, providing sensor and weapons platforms, allowing no surface or subsurface intrusions.

The surface vessel is a combination of stealth fighter aircraft and attack helicopter technologies packaged in a marine platform. It is designed to provide a marine surface and subsurface platform for tracking and identification of multiple targets. Systems for integrating on-board weapons will be designed to be capable of multi-target firing solutions while it operates at very high speed. These weapons integration systems will also allow for attacking several targets simultaneously with a variety of weapons systems options.

The same capabilities that have made helicopters valuable to get to hard to reach locations fast, will apply to the surface vessel in commercial applications in the maritime environment. Crew rotations or resupply runs for critical items to off-shore oil rigs can be accomplished two to three times faster than the craft currently in use and would be far less expensive and have fewer weather restrictions than using helicopter assets. The surface vessel is two to three times as fast as most ferries in use today.

* The roof holds a mount for a machine gun and rocket launcher.
* Triple the range of comparable sized ships
* super-cavitating surface craft which can achieve 900 times less hull friction than a conventional watercraft.
* The Ghost has achieved speeds of over 30 knots, and is being tested to 50 knots
* The current Ghost costs $10 million per copy, is crewed by 3-5 sailors, has an endurance of 30 days, and can be partially disassembled to fit in a C-17 Globemaster III for transport if needed. There is room for 16 passengers with two 6 in (15 cm)-diameter round windows in the hull.
* High-level discussions have been held with a foreign nation interested in 25 Ghosts for a potential $300 million sale. Juliet Marine also offered a scaled-up corvette-sized Ghost 150 ft (46 m) in length to the U.S. Navy as part of their re-evaluation of the Littoral Combat Ship program; costing about $50 million per vessel, it is six times cheaper than the $300 million per-ship cost of a Freedom-class and Independence-class littoral combat ship.

Operating a handful of warships and aircraft near Somalia will cost the European Union $8.3 million annually over the next two years. The average cost of an armed security team for commercial vessels is $2,000 to $4,000 per day. And there is no guarantee that the guns, guards, and warships will work. One of last year’s deadliest attacks happened aboard a tanker in the Gulf of Guinea that was protected by private security. Guards killed two pirates before retreating to a safe room, but the assault continued, and one crew member died.

Governments and shipping companies could continue to fight pirates in the same reactive fashion they always have. What companies like Juliet Marine offer is a more proactive approach, one that could discourage pirates before they ever leave shore.

Engagement is where Ghost would come in. It would operate in troubled waters, using barges or other ships as its base, and respond to calls from distressed vessels. Two or three Ghosts in a region could take the place of dozens of armed guards and battleships. And because they’d be a constant force, they would not only defuse active threats but also discourage any new ones.

That’s Greg Sancoff’s vision, at least. The current prototype can reach only 30 knots (just 10 knots faster than a souped-up Somali skiff), although Juliet Marine says a production model will nearly double that speed.

To make a stable vessel that doesn’t shoot into the air, as surface-skimming hydroplanes are wont to do, the hull needed to be anchored to the water. But how can one move something through the water without creating debilitating drag? The answer: Supercavitation. Among other benefits, the phenomenon makes craft more fuel-efficient and more stable for shooting at targets. The Russian military, Sancoff learned, had built a supercavitating rocket-powered torpedo, which traveled at 200 knots, roughly four times as fast as American weapons. But the torpedo was difficult to steer. The problem, he realized, was that the propellers were pushing from the back, rather than pulling from the front. “If you push a pencil across a table, it’s very hard to keep it going straight,” Sancoff explains. “If you pull the pencil, it’s easy.”

Installing Ghost’s propellers in front solved not only the control problem but actually furthered the vessel’s supercavitation by helping to push water aside, making room for air coming from above the water. It also meant that the craft would potentially be more stable and have less drag than hydrofoils, which also have hulls that rise out above the water. “That was the eureka,” says Sancoff. “I immediately started designing the boat on my kitchen table with a pen and paper.”

New 'Jurassic World' Trailer Unveils More Dino Details and Theme Park Damage

With the park’s opening getting closer, Universal has released the most violent and revelatory trailer for Jurassic World yet.

The film, written and directed by Colin Trevorrow (Safety Not Guaranteed), zooms ahead to the future — past the disasters that went down in the first three films — to a time when a fully operational theme park resort attracts tourists like a pre-historic SeaWorld. The whole operation seems to be going quite well — until the profit-hungry management decides that bringing dinosaurs back from the dead is no longer a good enough business plan. Now, they’ve genetically modified a new, even bigger dinosaur: The Indominus Rex.

It was a big mistake, because as this trailer reveals, the new creature is a genius killing machine, laying waste to humans with reckless abandon (and initially slaying a few dinos, as well). Things get worse when the Indominus Rex begins organizing other dinosaurs into a nightmare giant reptile militia, which could sink the island into an ocean of blood — and only Chris Pratt, as the cocky dino-whisperer Owen Grady, can save them.

In this new trailer, we get a fuller sense of just how dangerous this new dinosaur is, as well as a better picture of the damage he’s causing — both in taking human lives and wrecking the infrastructure of the park. The rides and concourses of the park seem to take nods from both SeaWorld and more traditional theme parks like Universal Studios (which makes sense, given the parent company) and Disney World, especially the Animal Kingdom in Orlando.

Here’s a suggestion for future travelers: Not even Donald Duck would ever go on this crazy of a rampage.

Jurassic World hits theaters on June 12.

'Jurassic World': 5 Raptor-ous Revelations From the New Trailer

The new Jurassic World trailer is stomping its way around the web, giving us another look at all the dino-devastation we can expect when the movie opens June 12. Here are some of the biggest moments from the new trailer:

1. Pratt knows how to talk to the animals.

We’ve long known that Pratt’s character, Owen Grady, was capable of taming the wildest beasts ever known to man. But now we know howhe does it: By simply chatting with 'em! “Stand down,” he tells a pack of 'raptors, who dutifully (if crankily) oblige. Later, he explains: “It’s not about control. It’s a relationship, based on respect.”

It may seem crazy that his method works, but keep in mind: All of the victims in the first three Jurassic films insisted on running and screaming when confronted by a prehistoric killer. Not once did someone sit down with one of those little Compsognathus fellas down and say, “Hey, you know what? I haven’t asked you about your day. How’d it go? Was work OK? Did things go OK with Shirley, or was she being weird again?” That kind of water-cooler chat could have saved countless lives!

2.  Bryce Dallas Howard isn’t putting up with any Pratt-splaining.

As we saw in that disappointingly retrograde clip released earlier this month — in which Bryce Dallas Howard’s park-chief was portrayed as a chilly shrew, with Pratt’s character as the super-laid-back bro —World’s two human leads don’t always get along. Hence Howard’s eye-roll reaction when Pratt points out the dino’s desires: “These animals are thinking, ‘I gotta eat. I gotta hunt. I gotta [international gesture for dinosaur-boinking].’ You’ve gotta be able to relate to at least one of those things.” These two have so much drama, whether it’s from their complicated past, crazed workplace, or prehistoric, gender-stereotyped character traits!

3. The park looks like it’d be a ton o’ fun…

Hoo-boy! Look at all those cool attractions: An aviary! A fun gyroscope-thingee! An underwater-feeding show! An above-groundfeeding show! This place is like SeaWorld, but without all of the post-Blackfish hand-wringing.

4. …until the attractions start talking to one another.

The new trailer reveals one of the biggest twists of Jurassic World: Namely, that the super-sized, super-smart Indominus Rex — a sort of dino GMO, made by scientists to wow the crowd — can actually communicate with the other creatures in the park, essentially turning the park’s inhabitants into the most menacing team of all-star reptiles since The Expendables. And when the dinos get loose, the first thing they want to do is eat their captors, drawing the ire (and the gunfire) of the park’s security chief, played by Vincent D’Onofrio, who warns his co-workers: “You’ve got got 20,000 people. You got no more boats. You don’t have enough guns.” (Which is just a more specific way of restating his Full Metal Jacket line, “I am in a world of s—.”)

5. The Pterodactyls are pterrifying.

Everyone’s been so obsessed with Indominus, they’ve lost site ofWorld’s potential scene-stealers: The Pterodactyls, who are freed by Indominus and then sent forth like flying monkeys to wreak havoc and pluck park-goers. One of them even wind ups feuding with the park’s underwater beast, known as Mosasaurus (we know that because we went to Mosasauri school). If Jurassic World gives us at least onebattle that combines Jaws with Q: The Winged Serpent, we’ll be first in line.

[북해 구드런 시추선] Shock Isolation(충격완충기) during Resupply of North Sea Drilling Platform

ITT Corporation’s Control Technologies business has partnered with Servi Hydranor AS, Norway’s largest distributor of hydraulic and hydraulic-related products, to engineer a shock and vibration isolation system for protecting cargo transferred from ships to the Norwegian oil company Statoil’s Gudrun Platform in the North Sea’s Gudrun field.

The Gudrun Platform, which was built by Aibel AS, operates cranes for around-the-clock cargo handling. As the crane operators hoist supplies from ships to the platform, containers (some weighing as much as 8,000 kg) move toward the Gudron Platform at speeds of up to 3 m/sec. The ITT-Servi Hydranor system, part of a barrier engineered by Aibel AS for the Gudrun Platform, includes highly tuned dampers that absorb the cargo’s kinetic energy.

Moving equipment from a supply ship onto an offshore platform in difficult conditions requires a highly engineered system of shocks and dampers, said Tomm Kuran, sales manager for Pneumatics at Servi Hydranor AS.

The Gudrun’s crane operators are moving food as well as heavy and expensive equipment for drilling. If an operator mishandles a container, people can be hurt or equipment can be destroyed. Aibel came to Servi Hydranor, an ISO 9001 certified company, and ITT early in the design process for the Gudron Platform with a set of specifications (including environmental conditions) and space limitations.

While offshore rig builders are experienced at stabilizing cranes, Aibel understood there were challenges for designing a dampening system for its cargo barrier.

Engineers were focused on helping crane operators safely pick and place cargo aboard the Gudrun Platform. Servi Hydranor and ITT completed the shock and isolation design work last year, and the Gudrun Platform is now in the Gudrun oil field off the coast of Norway.

ITT specializes in working with key partners like Servi Hydranor to engineer customized solutions for some of the most demanding applications in the world, said Munish Nanda, president of ITT’s Control Technologies business. We apply our engineering expertise to protect our customers’ systems and structures, so they can achieve their goals.

A mishandled container can cause damage to its contents or the platform itself, which could halt drilling operations, said Peter Bauer, managing director for ITT Control Technologies EMEA GmbH.

We’re able to customize and recommend engineering systems for projects like the Gudron Platform because we have experience with energy absorption technology for manufacturing, robotics, conveyors and overhead crane applications worldwide.

1. Select your tent

While the smallest one-man jobbie won't entice any high-gloss Kardashian-types to have undercanvas relations with you, for

once, a tiny erection does have an advantage: cram two people in there and they're incapable of doing anything other than

pressing their unwashed bits together. Or, if you really want to focus your mind on scoring, nothing is going to get you more

motivated than packing no tent at all. Park your backpack with your chommies, then get out there and get lucky, you hobo

2. Pitch it right

You can have the fanciest tent in the world, but park it in the wrong spot and you may as well spray "STD FACTORY, STAY

Fall In Love, Lose Weight

Do you ever see attractive couples walking around and curse their existence?

So do I! My eyes stink at their smiles, their hand-holding, and general joy.

We could sit here for a long time analyzing my reactions, but I should probably pay a psychiatric professional for that.

One thing we can touch on though, is their physique.

You see, when you’re in love, your body creates the hormone oxytocin.

It’s released after positive social interactions—think sex, hugging, hand holding, all that stuff.

Cracks in ISIS are becoming more clear

The biggest challenge to one of the world's most dangerous terrorist groups may now come from within.

The Islamic State, also known as ISIS or ISIL, which controls a chunk of Iraq and Syria the size of Britain, is facing pressing internal problems, according to multiple reports. The so-called caliphate's promises of Muslim unity have not stopped bitter disputes between foreign fighters and native Iraqis and Syrians.

"The key challenge facing ISIS right now is more internal than external," Lina Khatib, the director of the Carnegie Middle East Center in Beirut, told The Washington Post. "We're seeing basically a failure of the central tenet of ISIS ideology, which is to unify people of different origins under the caliphate. This is not working on the ground. It is making them less effective in governing and less effective in military operations."

The core dispute in the organization is the preferential treatment that foreign fighters receive over their local counterparts.

Foreigners in the organization earn as much as twice as much pay as local fighters. Foreign fighters also receive nicer living accommodations in ISIS-controlled cities and are less frequently deployed to the frontline than their Syrian or Iraqi counterparts, The Wall Street Journal reports.

This alleged preferential treatment has bred resentment within ISIS as locals feel they take a larger share of the military risk. The disparity has actually led to violence between the groups within ISIS: Foreign fighters and Syrian militants had a shootout in the town of Abu Kamal on the Iraqi border following an order that deployed the Syrians to the Iraqi front line, The Post reports.

This treatment has led ISIS to lose support among ordinary Syrians, many of whom have always viewed ISIS, which has its origins in Al Qaeda's Iraqi franchise, as a foreign Iraqi force to begin with.

ISIS "was never popular, but people supported them because they were scared or they needed money," Ahmed Mhidi, a Syrian businessman who fled to Turkey, told The Post. "Now people want nothing to do with them, and if the Islamic State puts pressure on them, they just flee."

Foreign fighters are also reportedly disillusioned with the group.

Foreigners who come to join ISIS generally have little military experience and little interest in actually fighting. Many had instead hoped to take part in the creation of the caliphate, a project that some view as both an exciting political and social experiment, as well as a religious obligation. When these foreigners are forced to fight, many have tried to desert only to face execution at the hands of ISIS.

"Some of these fighters go to Syria to live off the welfare of Islamic State — get a house, a wife in exchange for some lowly [bureaucratic] position. But now they're being asked to fight, and they don't always want to," an unnamed European official watching the flow of foreign fighters told The Wall Street Journal.

ISIS is facing a concerted Iraqi, Kurdish, and Iranian-backed push to retake the majority-Sunni city of Tikrit in Iraq. The loss of the city, the birthplace of Saddam Hussein, would be a particularly damaging blow to the group: Tikrit would be the first major Sunni city to be won back from the jihadist group.

Despite these possible setbacks, ISIS remains a major force in the region. The militants still retain control of most of the territory the group seized in 2014, including Iraq's second-largest city, Mosul.

Why Apple Keeps Winning in Style

How fashion-conscious will Apple Watch wearers be? Someone, surely, will want the 18-karat gold version. James Martin/CNET

NET’s Technically Incorrect offers a slightly twisted take on the tech that’s taken over our lives.

'NET의 기술적 오류'는 우리 생활을 재배하고 있는 기술에 관한 약간의왜곡된 반응을 제시한다.

The money men took notes and couldn’t suppress their smiles. Samsung executives took their Notes and slapped them hard against their foreheads.

Apple CEO Tim Cook had just announced that the company had sold 74.5 million iPhones in the last quarter of 2014.

It was even better than the money men had estimated. It was even worse than the Samsung executives had feared.

While the money men told themselves that Apple’s was a brilliantly organized business, at Samsung they muttered expletives and, perhaps, expressions of incomprehension.

ex·ple·tive [éksplǝtiv] ɑ. There is a book on the table.

After all, what had Apple done in that last quarter? Merely released big phones, which Samsung had done years before.

A pause, then, just to remind ourselves of what Apple does right and how it might leverage that in the future. There’s no accounting for taste. But Apple has turned taste into significant accounting.

lev·er·age [lévəridʒ, líːv-] n. ━vt., vi.

There’s almost a self-parody in Apple design chief Jony Ive talking about every new phone. He perhaps reached his peak parodic pomp with the suggestion in 2013 that the colorful iPhone 5C was “unapologetically plastic.” But Apple really does have a superior sense of taste.

While Ive can talk about a rounded edge for a round week, what real people see, the minute they set eyes on an Apple product, is something that they might not be able to define. But it’s something that their hearts and souls identify with style. It’s something they want to be a part of.

Words might fail them. They might opt for the catchall “cool.” But there’s a timelessness, an attention not merely to detail but to the effect of that detail, that makes even old iPhones look good.

There’s always been the perception that Apple products are reserved for those with more money. Money men like to talk about the margins Apple manages to maintain. But the brand now has a certain longevity and a powerful image-based presence. Its incursion into China shows that it’s seen as coveted.

More powerfully, though, look at how Apple has managed to span the generations. In a survey in August and September of last year, 73 percent of teens said their next phone would be an iPhone. Can it be that there is one style product that kids don’t mind being seen in their dad’s hands?

The company’s style superiority might now be taking on another dimension. Cook, not for the first time, mentioned Android switchers in his earnings presentation. Is it possible that some who had previously been value shoppers are now prepared to sacrifice a little more money in order to buy a more expensive phone?

The fashion fixation

After all, many is the fashion brand that has discovered new markets by understanding that people with less disposable income — those who were thought never likely to buy Gucci or Burberry — now want at least one item to show off.

I might not make a lot of money, but I can still buy a Burberry scarf. So there.

Have phones become so much a fashion item that there’s an ever greater shift toward being seen with the right brand?

As technology becomes fashionized — the whole concept of wearable tech, for example, necessarily carries a deep fashion component — Apple is well placed to take advantage.

It isn’t just that the company has hired brilliant individuals from the fashion world. (Did we mention that Apple’s new retail chief, Angela Ahrendts, had been Burberry’s CEO?) It’s that its whole ethos from the beginning has centered on looks as much as function.

Indeed, an essential component of style is simplicity. So the way Apple’s phones work nicely complements what the whole design is trying to achieve.

It’s not that Apple’s phones are without faults. The battery life still causes conniptions. The software isn’t exactly perfect. Occasionally boorish and patrician Top Gear presenter Jeremy Clarkson explained in today’s British Sunday Times (paywall) that there are times that he wishes Steve Jobs had never been born, “but I will not switch to another brand because I simply cannot be bothered to learn how it all works.”

We might be heading for a Futureworld where phones become more disposable, not less. As they lurch ever more toward fashion, we might be changing our phones every year.

Who better, then, than a brand already steeped in taste to take advantage of such a trend? The way in which fashion brands decide and drive what next year’s look will be might, just might, be a template for Apple.

If the brand continues to sell more phones, more globally, might it well decide to present an increased number of versions, of styles, of nuances?

That thought process is already present in the new Apple Watch. In describing it last September, Ive said: “We worked extremely hard to make it an object that would, one, be desirable but to be personal because we don’t want to wear the same watch. One of the reasons it takes us a long time [is] because, I think, people are very discerned. A lot of people don’t wear a watch, at the moment.”

In the end, Apple knows that it has to not merely maintain, but attempt to direct the zeitgeist. It has to foresee whether it can maintain just a few versions of its phone — keeping them as classics — or whether it must create more and more variations. Lines, if you like.

It isn’t about a bunch of ads making people feel that Apple is the coolest thing. The ads merely exist to remind you what products are out there and make you feel good about them. It’s the products themselves and the design behind them that are the best ads, the best marketing of all.

Apple starts from a position where most people still think it’s a cool brand. Annoying at times, but still cool.

How would people describe Samsung’s brand? For a time, it felt younger. It felt like the anti-Apple, at least in America. Recently, though, it lost its way. It sent out many products, but each with little definition or personality. The style, the impact, just wasn’t there. There was no core attitude, no core principle.

As the style slipped further down, so did the profits.

How interesting that, just two weeks ago, Samsung hired Don-tae Lee as its new head of global design. He used to be co-president at London’s Tangerine Studios.

Years back, one of Tangerine Studios earliest employees was Jony Ive.

'Jihadi John' had anger management therapy, says teacher

27 February 2015 Last updated at 23:19 GMT

The BBC has learned that Mohammed Emwazi, who has been identified as the Islamic State extremist 'Jihadi John', had anger management therapy at his secondary school in north-west London.

A teacher who knew him at the Quintin Kynaston academy, and asked for her identity to be protected, told the BBC's Newsnight that MI5 has since interviewed staff there.

She said she remembered a "lovely boy" who "had a real willingness to succeed", despite early behavioural problems.

US Christians back emerging private war on Iraq jihadists

Arbil (Iraq) (AFP) - After fighting with rebels in Libya and embracing the revolt in Syria, Matthew VanDyke has rolled up in northern Iraq, but the celebrity American revolutionary-cum-filmmaker has traded his fatigues for a three-piece suit.

VanDyke, who rose to fame as a foreign fighter backing Libyan rebels against Moamer Kadhafi, has just finished leading his new military contracting firm through its first assignment -- training Christian volunteers to take on jihadists.

Funded by Christian groups from abroad, mainly from the United States, the Nineveh Plains Protection Unit (NPU) aims to bring a local Christian militia to bear against the Islamic State group that has seized swathes of Iraq and Syria.

VanDyke is one of the best-known -- and least camera-shy -- figures in an expanding and complex constellation of foreign fighters, organisations and donors getting involved in a private war against the jihadists.

"This is an extension of my work as a revolutionary," he says as he takes a sip from his cappuccino in a cafe in the Kurdish capital of Arbil. "What gives somebody else the right to sit home and do nothing?"

The 35-year-old came to prominence in 2011 when he joined Libyan rebels in the fight to overthrow Kadhafi. He was held by regime forces in solitary confinement for more than five months.

The film "Point and Shoot" directed by Marshall Curry, which won the best documentary award at the Tribeca Festival last year, recounts the 35,000-mile motorcycle odyssey that led VanDyke to Libya and which he describes as "a crash course in manhood".

Not one to shy away from self-aggrandizement, VanDyke's official website claims that his own documentary on the Syrian conflict, in which he volunteered in 2012, won no fewer than 82 prizes.

A few months ago, VanDyke changed tack and decided to form his military contracting firm, the Sons of Liberty International (SOLI), with the training of a few hundred NPU volunteers as a first assignment.

    - 'Indigenous population' -

The Nineveh in the NPU's name refers to a northern region which Iraq's Assyrian Christians and other religious minorities consider their ancestral home.

IS last year declared a "caliphate" over parts of Iraq and Syria it had seized, forcing hundreds of thousands of civilians to flee their homes, including many Iraqi Christians.

The mostly Sunni Arab group has been accused of persecuting other communities and this week was reported to have taken several hundred Assyrian Christians hostage in northeastern Syria.

A US-led international coalition launched an air war on the jihadists in August and dispatched forces to train Kurdish and Iraqi federal troops who hope to eventually retake lost ground.

In the meantime other -- less official -- parties have been drawn into the conflict from abroad.

The NPU, for example, is being funded by the American Mesopotamian Organization (AMO), a California-based group founded by Assyrian-Americans.

It claims to have raised more than $250,000 for the NPU -- which has not yet seen combat -- since December through an initiative dubbed "Restore Nineveh Now".

More than 80 percent of the donations come from the United States, the group's chairman, David Lazar, told AFP by telephone from the United States.

He says telethons on the Assyrian National Broadcasting satellite channel generated donations "as high as $50,000 from one person".

As well as financing food, clothing and protection gear, the AMO has hired a "top five" private contracting firm to provide risk assessments and possibly advanced training to NPU recruits, he says.

Many of the donations are coming from members of the Assyrian-American community, like Joseph Baba, a car salesman from Tehran who has lived in the US since 2000 who donated a little less than $10,000 to the group.

"I'm a firm believer that the Middle East has to have this indigenous population," he says of Iraq's Christians, speaking to AFP by telephone from his home in California.

    - 'In a grey area' -

Baba said he had concerns over the legality of funding a militia -- though the NPU and its supporters balk at the term -- but was reassured by the AMO that it posed no problem.

Still, the issue of training a private force on foreign soil is highly sensitive and the NPU has sent out conflicting messages.

Lazar initially told AFP that Walid Phares, a Fox News terrorism analyst and formerly a prominent leader of the Lebanese Forces Christian militia during the 1975-1990 civil war, was a key supporter.

"He's an adviser to us to this whole project, not only the NPU, but he's an adviser to the Restore Nineveh Now initiative and the American Mesopotamian Organization," Lazar said.

But he later denied making the remark and Restore Nineveh Now's spokesman Jeff Gardner said Phares had no involvement.

In an email to AFP, Phares denied any role with the NPU, though he said he advises "a large coalition of US-based Middle East minorities NGOs, known as MECHRIC", of which AMO is a member.

VanDyke's role also seems to have stirred controversy.

Restore Nineveh Now issued a statement on Wednesday acknowledging VanDyke's involvement in the training programme but also stating his contract had been terminated and accusing him of attempting to use the NPU to promote his business.

VanDyke also admits his firm is operating "perhaps in a grey area" in northern Iraq.

"We're legally registered as a company. We're not registered as anything else right now."

A US State Department spokesman confirmed to AFP that a licence is needed when defence services, including military training, are provided.

VanDyke throws legal concerns to the wind.

"Generally the attitude of the United States seems to be as long as you shoot in the right direction they don't care," he says.

"You know, I go and risk my life in other countries, why would I be all that concerned about that?"

'Jihadi John' killer from Islamic State beheading videos unmasked as Londoner

By Michael Holden and Mark Hosenball

LONDON/WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The masked "Jihadi John" killer who fronted Islamic State beheading videos has been identified as Mohammed Emwazi, a British computer programming graduate from a well-to-do London family who was known to the security services.

The black-clad militant brandishing a knife and speaking with an English accent was shown in videos released by Islamic State (IS) apparently decapitating hostages including Americans, Britons and Syrians.

The 26-year-old militant used the videos to threaten the West, admonish its Arab allies and taunt President Barack Obama and British Prime Minister David Cameron before petrified hostages cowering in orange jump suits.

Emwazi's name was first disclosed by the Washington Post, citing unidentified former associates. Two U.S. government sources who spoke on condition of anonymity confirmed to Reuters that investigators believed Jihadi John was Emwazi.

China's next target for world domination: Soccer

For years, soccer in China has been a source of national embarrassment. It is the sport Chinese often care about most but also one that infuriates them most. For years, the most impressive ability of the men’s team has been its knack of finding new ways to disappoint.

knack [næk] n.

    Then came President Xi Jinping.

Before he even took office, Xi made clear his love of the game. Explaining his personal ambitions for China in 2011, he listed three, all soccer-related: To qualify for soccer’s World Cup, to host the event and, finally, one day to win it.

Since then, Xi has quickly become China’s most powerful and feared leader in decades. And now, officials from the central government to the lowliest provinces are falling over themselves to demonstrate their own love for soccer and to find ways of improving their country’s play.

In just the past few months, a high-level government working group has been set up to tackle the problem. Officials have declared soccer compulsory part of the national curriculum. About 20,000 soccer-themed schools are to open by 2017, with the goal of producing more than 100,000 players. Study-abroad programs have been rolled out, as well as initiatives to lure 35 international stars to China in the next year.

Rumors have even circulated of a secret plan for soccer reform from the State Council, China’s equivalent of a presidential cabinet.

All the attention and angst, of course, is about something bigger than soccer. To many here, the sorry state of Chinese soccer embodies all the problems and insoluble paradoxes China and its leader face.

angst [ɑːŋkst] n. (pl.

To compete globally, China needs innovation and creativity, and yet the Communist Party insists on top-down obedience and conformity by edict.

    con·form·i·ty [kǝnfɔ́ːrmǝti] n. 적합, 일치 《to; with》; 상사(相似), 유사《to; with》; 준거, 복종; 순응주의

edict [íːdikt] n.

Its government is hopelessly riddled with graft (a problem to which Xi has responded with the most ruthless anti-corruption campaigns in modern history).

graft [græft, grɑːft] n.

Runaway growth has afforded China resources, including money to plow into soccer development, foreign coaches and trainers, but the country has yet to figure out how to sustain that growth without creating more problems.

Soccer, in other words, taps into deep Chinese insecurities that — no matter what great leaps the country has made or grudging deference it has earned through economic or military might — China remains an inferior power.

As an editorial in China’s Southern Metropolis Daily newspaper framed it: Dreams have power, and the constant jarring reality of Chinese football threatens nothing less than the Chinese ability to dream of a more powerful nation.

    Perennially losing

Most Chinese believe soccer was invented here, citing records from the 3rd century B.C. of a sport involving a hair-filled leather kickball.

To understand why soccer and its constant defeating sting are so deeply rooted in the Chinese psyche, you have to understand the country’s past, says Xu Guoqi, a Harvard-educated historian at the University of Hong Kong.

First, take into account centuries of feelings of emasculation at the hands of Western powers and the Japanese. (Curiously, the national hand-wringing mainly involves the men’s team; the women’s team often performs well to little fanfare.)

“For decades, Chinese interest in sports as a whole has not been about personal joy or pleasure but about politics,” Xu said. “It’s seen as a path to ruling legitimacy, geopolitical standing, projection of power.”

So just how bad is China’s soccer? Late last year, the men’s team wasranked 97th — a few spots behind the Caribbean nation of Antigua and Barbuda (population 90,000) and not far ahead of northern Europe’s Faroe Islands (population 49,500).

In the past three decades, China’s men’s team has made it into the quadrennial World Cup tournament only once (in 2002, when the team quietly exited without scoring a single goal).

Anger over China’s perennial failures has incited riots — notable in a country where protests are illegal and met with brutal force. Fearful of that rage, the national team has at times posted online apologies after particularly bad games.

Its most ignominious was perhaps a 2013 loss to Thailand’s weak and even lower-ranked team. A Chinese mob afterward blocked the team bus from leaving and shouted obscenities at the players. A full-fledged riot soon ensued, in which at least 100 were injured.

    Contributing factors

The puzzling thing is that China has all the necessary ingredients for a strong team, including a nationwide love for the sport and a vast population (1.4 billion) from which to draw talent.

Several new policies are intended at widening that pool. The 20,000 existing elementary, middle and high schools chosen nationwide for renovation into soccer-focused institutions will receive soccer fields, coaches and extensive funding and training. Few details have been released about the new curriculum and what may be sacrificed to make room for soccer during the day.

Advanced students will be sent to overseas campuses that China is setting up in Spain and the Netherlands.

In Beijing, soccer will even be added to the mandatory high school entrance exams, and every school will be required to include soccer in its physical education.

There is precedent for government-orchestrated success. When, during the 2008 Beijing Olympics, sports mattered politically, China’s Soviet-era methods netted a record haul of gold medals.

As a game, however, soccer works quite differently, many believe. For all the sport’s deep-seated problems, it is still much harder to rig, train or even dope your way to a championship. It is a social sport that requires both teamwork and individual creativity.

Some blame Chinese society, given how few parents in China’s competitive education system will allow their children to spend precious study hours kicking a ball.

Others point to pervasive corruption among Chinese soccer officials.

A few sports analysts blame the political system. Speaking anonymously for fear of being known to have criticized the Communist Party, the analysts point out that few authoritarian or dictatorial countries have ever found success at the World Cup.

    Doomed by success?

Xi’s public enthusiasm for soccer feeds into an everyman image that he has cultivated since he took power in late 2012 — a stark departure from China’s traditionally wooden leaders.

It comes with few risks — if Chinese soccer continues to fail, who can blame Xi? The upside, however, is infinite.

“It would mean leadership, legacy,” said Xu, the historian. “Xi is an ambitious man. If he pulls this off, he would be the hero of China.”

There already are glimmers of the pandemonium such success would bring.

Last month at the Asian Cup, China somehow won three games in a row. Although the team made it only to the quarterfinals, China’s state-run Xinhua News Agency called it a “fairy-tale run.” The players were hailed as heroes.

Some on Chinese social media said they were moved to tears. One blogger summed up the moment this way: “I can now die with no regrets.”

And party officials, of course, leapt to take credit. The anti-corruption agency Xi has unleashed upon thousands of terrified government officials declared it a direct result of its watchful eye on soccer officials.

When asked about this scramble to bask in Chinese soccer’s newfound glory, Ma Dexing sighed deeply. As deputy editor in chief of the popular sports magazine Titan, Ma has a distinctly different theory about the recent wins.

For years, China’s team has been performing so poorly that officials were reluctant to wreck their careers by becoming involved with it.

That brief respite from constant, misguided top-down management, Ma believes, is what has most helped improve Chinese soccer.

Ironically, he worries, the team’s recent success — combined with the sudden upsurge of government interest — spells only one thing for Chinese soccer: doom.

“The level of Chinese soccer is actually not that bad,” he insists. The problem is everything else that comes with it.

Revealed: Why China Would Lose a War against America

Chinese military might have grown considerably. However, Beijing's weaknesses abound.

*abound [ǝbáund] vi.

Let’s not mince words: a U.S.-China war would be hell on earth.

It would likely start World War III. Millions— maybe billions— of people would die if nuclear weapons were ever used in such a conflict

The global economy would likely face ruin— that’s what happens when the world’s biggest economic powers start shooting at each other.

Thankfully the chances are remote it will ever happen. Yet, the threat of such a conflict remains thanks to the many different pressure points in the U.S.-China relationship.

Forget the challenge of ISIS, Ukraine, Syria or whatever the flavor of the moment is. The U.S.-China relationship— and whether it remains peaceful or not— is the most important challenge of our time. Period.

Several days ago I examined in a short piece on these digital pages how China could do great damage to U.S. and allied military forces in a war.

Thanks to over twenty years of large scale investments, the PRC has gone from being a third-rate military that could project very little offensive punch to arguably the second most powerful military machine on the planet.

And with an emphasis on weapons systems that embrace anti-access/area-denial military doctrine (A2/AD), China seems to be developing the tools it needs if war with America did ever come to pass.

Beijing’s motto these days: be prepared.

pro·ject[prǝdʒékt] vt. • ~ a new dam 새로운 댐을 계획〔설계〕하다. • ~ a missile into space

ár·gu·a·ble ɑ.

This article examines the challenges China would face against the U.S. in a conflict -- but in a very broad, top-down, and practical sort of way.

This time I will avoid the fun but sometimes easy to pick apart scenario-style type of analysis.

While Beijing certainly has the tools to get the job done when it comes to a war with Washington, the challenges China would face in such a conflict would be immense— and many of them could be quite basic.

The PRC would be going to war against the premier military power on the planet— some would argue the most lethal fighting machine of all time.

In this essay we will review some of the important foundational reasons why many argue, quite convincingly, that the U.S. would very well defeat China in a war.

A Great Mystery: Just How Good Is China’s Military Anyway?

Yes, Beijing keeps cranking out those whizz-bang high-tech weapons of war like sausages.

    whíz(z)-bàng n.

China has those shiny, new carrier-killer missiles that everyone is always fretting about (including yours truly.)

fret [fret] vt. • His remarks ~ted her to irritation.

Its building aircraft carriers, 5th generation fighters, multiple types of cruise missiles, nuclear and ultra quiet diesel submarines, drones, mines and so on.

It all looks really good— at least on paper.

When it comes to a war with the U.S. how well would Beijing be able to use all that stuff?

The real question seems pretty simple: yes, China is certainly developing all the military and technology goodies to field a potent force.

However, how well can it operate all that equipment in the pressure filled situation of a war? Sure, Beijing is certainly developing a world-class military, but can its soldiers operate all that equipment competently? Just how well trained are they? You can have the best military in the world but if you don’t know how to use it, well, you get the idea.

Opinions are mixed on this for sure. Ian Easton from Project 2049, in a piece for The Diplomat, reminds us of the possible capabilities, nature, and mission of the PLA— and its certainly not all about America:

The winter's deep freeze has transformed Niagara Falls into an icy spectacle, encasing the trees around it into crystal shells and drawing tourists who are braving below-zero temperatures.

The Niagara River keeps flowing below the ice cover, so the falls aren't completely frozen over. But the massive ice buildup near the brink has become a tourist magnet for the second straight year after several relatively mild winters. (AP)

Kim Jong Un has an amazing new haircut. We have many, many questions.

    -

North Korean Supreme Leader Kim Jong Un debuted a new haircut — and a new ... eyebrowcut? — at a politburo meeting on Wednesday. The style is a variation on Kim's signature shaved sides, but with the top now sculpted into a high, wedge-shaped pompadour that sits atop Kim's head like a hat, or perhaps a small, dormant woodland creature. The North Korean despot accessorized his new look with partially-shaven eyebrows that now stop just above his pupils.

This new haircut raises a number of important questions for anyone who follows North Korean politics. For instance:

    1. What instructions did Kim Jong Un give his barber that resulted in this style?
    3. Was it, "Hey, you know trapezoids?"
    5. Or perhaps, "You know my main priority is to ensure that my ears do not feel crowded, let's work on a 'do that really lets the old face-handles breathe"?
